Sat, 7 March 2009 Look,..It's a bird, it's a plane....no it's Joe Harris. He's right here and I talked with him for an hour about all things UNDERDOG!!! Keep in mind that it was a "land line" telephone conversation, so I was only able to record the interview at a minimum quality level. It also picked up my breathing as if I was a 400lb. Sumo struggling for every breath. Oh well,..I was just very happy to be able to talk with the artist that had such a profound impact on my childhood! Comments[6] |
Wow! How did you score this?! I didn't realize you were such a powerbroker of Toondom. I'll have to be nice to you now.
Underdog was to me what Prince Charming was to the other girls on my block. And now I'm happily married and they're all in prison.

Joe Harris is one of a kind! Not only is he an amazing talent,....he's one heck of a great guy! Talking with Joe was a real pleasure! Underdog was such an integral part of my childhood, that I just HAD to talk to the man behind the designs!

I just listened to this one for the second time...It's the kind of interview you NEVER get to hear...the unromantic and TRUE story about the way cartoons get made and the REAL life of a cartoonist. Genius stuff. One for the time capsule. Thanks so much for bringing this one into the world.

Am downloading now and will listen to later...he was guest of honor at Anthrocon in Pittsburgh earlier this month. It was great to hear his panels on the creation and evolution of Underdog and the Trix Rabbit; his reaction to the U-dog movie's premise, and more.

Interesting interview! Had not heard that they insisted on having real kids on the Trix ads,
not adults doing kid voices. He did mention some of this during the panels at Anthrocon--did you make it
to the Con? You said you were hoping to.
During the panels I mentioned one attraction to the Trix rabbit ads for kids was that when we're kids, we're told we CAN'T do so many things. Not allowed. BUT we can have Trix..._the rabbit can't_. And Joe does bring up a great point: you don't spoil the attraction by actually letting him have the Trix, which happened in some spots.

No,..I was unable to attend the con as I was faced with a financial choice of going to the con or taking the family on vacation. Family wins every time. Joe was so right about the fact that allowing the rabbit to actually have the Trix was a bad idea. Some genius executive thought it was a good idea and the ad lost it's appeal shortly thereafter. It was a bad move. Now they pretend that event never took place.
Joe Harris will always be my all time favorite cartoonist as his work has a special place in my heart. I hope to meet him one day when I'm in NYC.
